September, the beginning of the new school year. Sometimes it feels like the beginning of a New Year.
However you feel about it, it’s a great time to take a look at your Pilates practice
For those of you have been doing Pilates classes or at home for a long time how after do you go back to your basic Pilates exercises?
By now I would expect by now you to have
- a strong core
- good flexibility and mobility
- a good technique
- ability to do intermediate and advanced moves of most Pilates exercises.
Could you say YES to most of these?
As a Pilates teacher I find after 17 years of teaching that sometimes we get into bad habit with our Pilates practice!
- we either do the same exercises over and over again. (because we like them!)
- we therefore don’t challenge out our core enough and maybe aren’t as strong as we think we are!
This week saw the start of my classes after a long summer break over here in the UK.
I decided to go back to basics but not right back to the beginning because we have been doing Pilates for several years now. So we needed to keep it challenging and interesting.
We went through the set up
- finding neutral
- engaging the core
- breathing
All the things we should be doing automatically.
The results of going back to Basic Pilates exercises.
What surprised me the most was the number of questions my clients asked – “where they in the right position” and also the feedback when we started doing the exercises ” oh I can really feel this!”, exercises that they had been doing for years!
Maybe it was my teaching, but the teaching points were the same as normal.
What I think happened.
- I slowed things down
- I got concentration in the class
- I changed the way I taught some of the exercises.
- I did fewer exercises
- I got my clients to be more aware of their own bodies
- I repeated & repeated the teaching points (probably more than I normally do!)
Feedback from my class this week
” I liked it because each exercise took longer, more considered with more variations.”
” also liked the are you feeling it in the right places”
” the hour went super quick and I just enjoyed it!”
” a lovely slow but impact first week back!”
So how often do you go back to basics Pilates exercises?
It might surprise you to find it can highlight areas you thought you were good at or where you had formed bad habits.
