How often do you go back to basic Pilates moves?
No matter how advanced your Pilates practice becomes, it’s important to revisit the basic Pilates moves and exercises on a regular basis to maintain proper form, technique and body awareness.
Whether it’s the start of the year or a new month it’s a great time to take a look at your Pilates practice
For those of you have been doing Pilates classes or Pilates online for a while how often do you go back to your basic Pilates moves?
By now you probably have:
- a strong core
- good flexibility and mobility
- a good technique
- ability to do intermediate and advanced moves of most Pilates emoves.
Could you say YES to most of these?
As a Pilates teacher I find after 25 years of teaching that sometimes we get into bad habit with our Pilates practice!
We either do the same exercises over and over again. (because we like them!) and that means we aren’t challenging our core enough and maybe aren’t as strong as we think we are!
Going over the Basic Pilates moves can be fun.
In class i often have a week when we go back to our basics Pilates moves but not right back to the beginning because we have been doing Pilates for several years now. So we need to keep it challenging and interesting.
But first we recap the foundations:
- finding neutral
- engaging the core
- breathing
All the things we should be doing automatically.
The results of going back to basic Pilates moves.
What surprised me the most was the number of questions my clients asked – “where they in the right position” and also the feedback when we started doing the exercises ” oh I can really feel this!”, exercises that they had been doing for years!
Maybe it was my teaching, but the teaching points were the same as normal we just changed the focus.
What I think happened.
- I slowed things down
- I got concentration in the class
- I changed the way I taught some of the exercises.
- I did fewer exercises
- I got my clients to be more aware of their own bodies
- I repeated & repeated the teaching points (probably more than I normally do!)
Feedback from my class from our basic Pilates week
” I liked it because each exercise took longer, more considered with more variations.”
” also liked the way you are feeling it in the right places”
” the hour went super quick and I just enjoyed it!”
” a lovely slow but impact first week back!”

It might surprise you to find it can highlight areas you thought you were good at or where you had formed bad habits.
