Pilates running: The 10-Minute Post-Run Routine That Keeps Me Strong at 60

Are you that runner, the one who watches a quick reel and thinks:

“Maybe just 10 minutes of Pilates after my run could actually help…”

That’s exactly how it started for me.

Why I Combine Pilates running exercises

I’ve been a Pilates instructor for  25 years—and a runner for just as long. Over the years, I realised that it’s not just the miles that make us better runners, but how we look after our bodies between those miles.

That’s where Pilates came in.

Now, at 60, I’m still running strong and chasing PBs—and I truly believe my consistent Pilates practice is what’s kept me going injury-free and feeling better than ever.

Why Running and Pilates Works So Well

Here’s the magic: doing Pilates after a run is a game-changer.

After running, your muscles are warm and more open to mobility work. Even though you’re a bit tired, it’s the perfect time to gently strengthen and stretch, helping your body recover and reset.

Spending just 10 minutes after a run focusing on movement, breath, and alignment can:

✅ Ease tightness and stiffness

✅ Improve posture and flexibility

✅ Boost your recovery

✅ Help prevent injuries

✅ Support long-term running performance

What the Research Says About Running and Pilates

This isn’t just personal experience—there’s research to back it up too.

A study in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine found that runners who did Pilates regularly improved their 5K performance, thanks to better movement efficiency and core strength.

Another review showed that Pilates can even improve cardiorespiratory fitness—helping you build endurance without high-impact training.

Running and Pilates really do go hand in hand.
